New Music of the Day – XII : Not Meant For This World – Tim Kuhnert

There have been times over the last few years when it seemed like ever fifth musician I knew was emigrating to Berlin, having spent time there it is easy to see why. Having written about a number of British ex-pat artists making music there, it was nice to be sent something a bit more home grown in the form of Tim Kuhnert.

Acting as a calling card for the forthcoming album of the same name, here it is the desire to keep things simple that holds the key; visually the singer wanders through an out of focus, black and white, urban landscape, but musically everything is kept sharp and to the point. Unfussy musical lines seem to channel the less art school end of post-punk, new wave…call it what you will, so that you are able to focus on the lyrics of the song, alienation, or at least a sense of being at odds with the world around him is the main theme here.

As an antidote to all of the style over substance music that we seem to be force fed at the moment, there is much to love about this song. Punk attitude prevails in it’s desire to ignore the fickle followers of fashion and it just gets on with the job with a minimum of fuss. Just as it should be.
