New Music of the Day – CCVIII: Fly – Kozie

18156875_809561382533125_7338101219943468578_nIt’s amazing how Kozie is able to blend so many musical references – funky back beats, the new pop vibe of the British eighties post punk era, smooth contemporary chart orientated sounds, timeless soul grooves and more besides, and still produce a wonderfully understated song. It is textured rather than sonically cluttered, which with all that going on, it could have easily become in the hands of a lesser arranger. Layered rather than full, musically poignant rather than sonically powerful.

And it is in this less is more ethos, the song’s ability to weave all these myriad musical points into one classic and cohesive design that is its charm. Musical understatement is not just about the absence of sonic mass, it is designing just the right structure with what remains and Kozie seems to be a man on top of his game in this regard.
