I’m always drawn to creative people bucking trends and Bluebird ‘64‘s mission to release ten, full, 10-track albums over as many years is a wonderful and outsider undertaking in these days of bands dropping one single every couple of months. The Bird On The Branch kicked things off last year and true to his word here is the wonderfully named follow up.
Other trends being bucked on this album are avoidance of the slick studio production which is the hallmark of artists who need to make up for their lack of songwriting ability and the lack of influence of fad and fashion. This is the sound of an artist doing his own thing, his own way, largely unadorned and celebrating the song rather than the scene.
There are elements of raggle-taggle, alt-country, bare-bones busking and coffee shop singer-songwriter ethic throughout the album but songs such as Everybody Feel Alright shows that he has a knack for producing deft little retro-infused, indie-roots tunes and Revolution No.3 glows with Summer of Love rock vibes.
But beyond all of that, what really appeals to be is how Bluebird ’64 as an artist remains an elusive figure, preferring to make the music the focal point and avoiding the tricks and trappings of the modern PR game. And that is a display of honesty and integrity which is severely lacking in the modern musical world. I would applaud him just for such an attitude alone but the fact that he has managed to produce a cracker of an album, one peppered with great songs and harking black to a more talent driven time, really is the icing on the cake.
