I probably made a similar point when talking about my first encounter with KMD, that she has an uncanny knack of writing songs that feel like the most accessible pop offerings yet retain the sort of outsider cool which is hardly ever found in the mainstream. And if the songs on Harness seemed to sum this up neatly, Waves Break is somehow simultaneously more infectious and more odd. But not odd for the sake of it, odd because it doesn’t trade integrity for acceptance, doesn’t cash in it’s underground and alternative ethics just to be popular. Odd because that’s just the way that she writes. And odd, is such a context, is good…actually odd is great.
And on the strength of this, DuBois is destined to be popular and it is this ability to be friends with the cool kids and still run with the pack that makes her a bit of a Trojan Horse. It is that which gives her the ability to smuggle her mercurial and marvellous music past the city gates of conformity and change the pop scene from the inside. For pop this is, only pop playing by its own rules. It’s perky, sun-drenched, groove-some, wonderfully addictive but at the same time as the mainstream movers and shakers are embracing KMD as their new found friend, she will be looking back at them with a knowing and enigmatic smile on her lips. Smart, integrity filled pop music? Whatever next?
