Slipping Away – Robbie Agnew (reviewed by Dave Franklin)

There probably was a time when there wasn’t such a thing as a singer-songwriter but it was a long time ago. And over all of those years since then, from medieval troubadours to 60’s Greenwich Village agitators to the modern pop guitar slinger, little has changed in the format. And why is that? Well, because once something finds its perfect form then there seems no point messing with the formula. Or as they say, “If it aint broke, don’t fix it.” And whilst Robbie Agnews debut single wanders some very familiar sonic ground, it is very much the “if it ain’t broke…” ethic that is at work here.

Slipping Away displays all of the hallmarks of the classic guy with guitar sound, the one employed to great success by everyone from James Taylor to Ed Sheeran. It is clearly delivered, spacious and lyrically heartfelt. The vocals soar memorably over a simple beat and some straight down the line acoustica. Simple, honest musical fare. But that is the point isn’t it? When you have a song this engaging and an artist who can deliver it so deftly, why bother with musical gimmicks and studio noodling. Music made for the love of making music. You don’t get that very often do you?
